Business Card Design
Business card design is something that a lot of businesspeople take for granted. But one thing I've learned in my ten years as an entrepreneur is that ALL of the details count, including the business card. A good business card can make the difference between having a LOT of clients and not being able to pay your bills.
Most people who write about business card design worry a lot about stuff like fonts, graphics, and colors. Don't skimp on any of these things. Get a designer to help you with these things if you're not good at graphic design. But don't stop there.
The most important thing about your business card design is the message. What does it say to your potential customers? What does your card say about who you are and how you do business?
Your unique selling proposition should ALWAYS be featured on your business card. When I worked for Hotel Reservations Network in the mid 90's, the unique selling proposition was, "Best prices on hotels. Guaranteed." That's solid. That tells a customer why she should do business with you.
What are some other examples of unique selling propositions? That guy who got famous for his "Your Business Card Is Crap" video on YouTube has a clear unique selling proposition on his business cards too. "Crowds guaranteed."
The word "guaranteed" is a powerful word. If you're able to include it on your business cards, then you should do so. It makes sales, and it motivates customers to want to do business with you.
Another powerful word to include on your business card is "free." No matter what business you're in, you should be able to provide your customers with something for free just for becoming your customer. It can be as simple as a self-published booklet about your industry. For example, if you're a plumber, you could offer a free report about how to keep your plumbing in good condition. It doesn't sound exciting, but it's a value add. And it's a value add that most other plumbers in your area aren't offering.
When you get ready to get some business cards printed, take a look at BusinessCards.org Printing Service. They're the best source for business card information we've found online. Or you can shop around a little bit in the BOTW directory of business card printing services.
